For several years we have wanted to do a western story. In fact, WANTED is the story of Gideon told in a western setting. The Biblical theme this summer is “with God;” a concept out of the story of Gideon.
The overarching theme of Gideon’s story is expressed when the Angel of the Lord greets Gideon. As Gideon is fearfully standing in a winepress threshing wheat, the Angel of the Lord says, “The Lord is with you, valiant warrior.” Gideon is a small, weak fearful young man; a Barney Fife kind of guy. Can’t you see Gideon looking behind him over each shoulder to see who the Angel of the Lord is addressing? Not seeing anyone I can picture Gideon saying, “You talkin’ to me?”
The mighty thing about our Lord Jesus Christ is that he loves using the underdog to do his work. Talk about an underdog; Gideon was one. Camp Siloam’s vision is that our campers and staff would make an eternal, global impact for the kingdom of God. To be people of eternal, global impact, campers and staff must understand their identity in Jesus Christ, know they have a purpose in His kingdom and be sold out to God’s mission for the world. Gideon’s story is rich with all these points.
Our hope is that summer 2021 campers see these truths: with God we are more than our view of ourselves. With God we can be who he’s calling us to be. With God we can do what he’s calling us to do. Without him we are nothing. This summer let your students hear a message that with God they are someone, with God they have direction for life, with God they have purpose, direction and a mission. With God they can do more than they ever dreamed or imagined.
